Two-way Street by Lauren Barnholdt / Review

Jordan broke Courtney’s heart when he dumped her for a girl he met on MySpace, but now they have to spend three days together on a pre planned road trip to college. Courtney is just going to pretend she doesn’t care, but the problem is she does and so does Jordan, but Courtney can never find out the real reason why Jordan dumped her.

This book was one that i found on the Kindle brought the preview, loved it but never got round to buying the full book. I loved the idea of this book and thought it was very original and I’m sure it is a situation that none of us would ever want to be in.

The chapters are split equally between Courtney and Jordan and they are from the couples first meeting up to and including each day of the trip, I really enjoyed reading both characters views on their friends and relationship and i felt like i had a better insight into both characters.

I don’t think this book had many twists and turns and i could see what was going to happen from very early on in the book as it is practically spelt out to you at the time, but that didn’t take any enjoyment away for me and i still really enjoyed this book.

Lauren Barnholdt is the author of Reality Chick and has a new YA book Sometimes it Happens out in the Autumn.

4/5

Books - April 2011

Story of a girl by Sara Zarr

If i stay by Gayle Forman - I loved this book so much and can not wait to read the sequel where she went which is due out on the 28th April

Lucy in the sky by Paige Toon -  This really isn’t my usual type of book but I just couldn’t resist it, it was exactly as i imagined but i found myself unable to put it down and read it in only a few days, I really enjoyed the story and am going to be looking at more of the authors books.

February 2011

So February was a quiet month for me in terms of reading as i only read Whip It by Shauna Cross which is the book which the film with the same name is based on, about a young girl who is forced into beauty pageants by her mother when all she wants to do is get out of her boring town and move to Austin, whilst out shopping one day (only for mother approved clothes of course) she sees a flyer for a Roller Derby match happening that weekend and convinces her friend to go with her, after 10 minutes she is hooked and ends up becoming a Hurl Scout, and spending her days in Boden dreaming about Austin and the world of Roller Derby.

I loved the film so I was very happy when i got this for Christmas, as with the film the book didn’t disappoint and I know it will be one i will be reading again, unfortunately Roller Derby is only just getting going over here but I would love to go and see a game for real!

January 2011

Books i’ve read this month

1. Two-way Street by Lauren Barnholdt

Courtney and Jordan split up two weeks ago because Jordan met someone else on MySpace sounds fine enough, but what if you then had to spend a roadtrip to college together? But things are not all as they seem as Jordan still loves Courtney and there is no other girl but Courtney can’t find out the real reason they had to break up.

2. Twelve days of Christmas by Trisha Ashley

Holly has always tried to ignore the festive season until she is offered a house sitting job in the Lancashire moors, everything seems fine at first until suddenly the owners family have invited themselves for Christmas and the owner Jude Martland has returned from his trip early only to all be snowed in, this will definitely not be a Christmas that Holly forgets.

3. Just Listen by Sarah Dessen

Annabel Greene is the girl who has everything…on the outside but look a little deeper and the perfect face, perfect family and perfect life isn’t all that it seems to be. Then she meets Owen and he makes her stop and just listen to herself and hopefully she will see who she really is and try to get over what happened at the end of last summer once and for all. Can she trust Owen or will she carry on pretending everything is ok?

4. Nick and Norah’s infinite playlist by Rachel Cohn and David Levithan

Nick just needs to get through this gig and then he can carry on missing his ex Trish, and then she turns up with a new guy on her arm, what happens? He asks Norah to be his girlfriend for 5 minutes, not knowing that Norah has her owns reasons to hide from Trish. What follows is a night of alcohol, friends, growing up and Where’s Fluffy..

I tried to be perfect,
But nothing was worth it,
I don’t believe it makes me real.
I thought it’d be easy,
But no one believes me,
I meant all the things I said.
If you believe it’s in my soul
I’d say all the words that I know
Just to see if it would show,
That I’m trying to let you know,
That I’m better off on my own.
This place is so empty,
My thoughts are so tempting,
I don’t know how it got so bad.
Sometimes it’s so crazy,
that nothing can save me,
But it’s the only thing that I have.

If you believe it’s in my soul,
I’d say all the words that I know,
Just to see if it would show,
That I’m trying to let you know,
That I’m better off on my own.
I tried to be perfect,
It just wasn’t worth it,
Nothing could ever be so wrong.
It’s hard to believe me,
It never gets easy,
I guess I knew that all along.
If you believe it’s in my soul,
I’d say all the words that I know,
Just to see if it would show,
That I’m trying to let you know,
That I’m better off on my own.

DLC for video games

So every Easter in an effort to be healthy and the fact that we normally still have chocolate left from Christmas, Neil and I will buy each other a new game. Last year Neil picked me up Dragon Age Origins, which was a game I was really looking forward to trying specially as it was my first proper RPG. I eagerly started it and sunk about 10 hours (yes I am aware that isn’t a lot for a game of its size) and then I stopped playing it for one reason or another. At Eurogamer Expo last year I tried to stay away from the DAII demos as I didn’t want to ruin any story line and promised myself I would get back into the first one before the new one is released in February, however I’ve just found out today something that really really bugs me… They have released DLC information for DAII before the game has been released! How can you make a game, expect people to pay £35 for it safely in the knowledge that it isn’t complete? I know there are people out there that will quite happily pay the extra but I think it’s bad to announce there is going to be DLC before the game has been released. That’s like saying you can have this coat but your going to have to pay an extra £10 for the buttons. So if you don’t download the extra content are you going to have the same experience? Take Alan Wake for instance, I truly loved that game (even though it scared the crap out of me numerous times!) but the ending? Seriously you call that an ending? No Remedy cry, pay a extra 800 points and find out what really happened! Unfortunately it seems to me that most developers are going down this route now, it has definitely put me off the Dragon Age series which is a shame as it was something i could of really sunk my teeth into.
